摘 要:We present a multi-period model of sequential search under product differentiation. We show that consumers’ optimal search strategy when anticipating repeat purchases takes the same form as under single purchase, but with a higher reservation value that increases search intensity and market-share rivalry while creating customer loyalty. The dynamic search incentive improves product-match quality, though its welfare effect is non-monotonic when firms’ exploitation of repeat customers causes total output to fall. The equilibrium outcome also depends, in interesting ways, on whether there is price discrimination or/and switching costs, and whether time horizon is finite or infinite. Our analysis provides a general framework for understanding consumer behavior and price competition in dynamic search markets.
