Abstract

Some journals have adopted policies intended to increase confidence in the reliability of published papers (including OBHDP, SMJ and MOR). For example, some policies require that authors make their data available for a specified period of years following the publication of a paper in the journal. The empirical files to be preserved include actual data sets, data transformations, analyses, output files, survey questionnaires, experimental procedures, instructions, interview recordings and transcripts, as well coding procedures, etc. Discussion topics include 1) The quest of the empirical social sciences to satisfy “Popperian” standards of falsifiability; 2) Why empirical social science should not be equated with empirical natural/physical science research. 3) Implications of Open Access Journals.

Topic Knowledge Creation, Entrepreneurship, Innovation and conomic Growth: The Case of China Management Research

主讲嘉宾:ARIE Y. LEWIN

Abstract:

As China’s unprecedented economic growth slows, the country finds itself facing off against economic history. How China plans to tackle that dilemma is the subject of this seminar, based on the “China’s Innovation Challenge: Overcoming the Middle Income Trap,” a new book co-edited with Martin Kenney and J. Peter Murmann and published by Cambridge University Press. The seminar discusses challenges facing the Chinese leadership to fashion an indigenous solution transforming China into an innovation economy under the assumption that China will not be adopting democratic reforms. The talk focuses on barriers to innovation at every level of the economy – institutional, national absorptive capacity, higher education, regional differences, entrepreneurship, technological upgrading, liability of foreign language competence, inward and outward FDI and the power of sheer pragmatism.

Topic The Myth and Reality of Becoming an Open Innovation Organization: Lessons from Haier Adoption of Six Radical Innovations

主讲嘉宾:ARIE Y. LEWIN

Abstract

Absorptive Capacity capability to adopt internally generated innovations is fundamental to creating an open innovation organization. However, the empirical literature is much more voluminous about the barriers to stimulating, selecting and implementing innovations either bottom up or from the external environment. The research presented in this seminar focuses on the selection regime – the routines which drive innovation ideas bottom up or from the external environment and then determine which new ideas are selected for further development and adoption. It describes six cases of the Haier Company adopting radical innovations. The focus of the paper is on the process and specific exceptions to established selection routines which enable the six innovations to be adopted and implemented.
