Join Round Table: How to Become a Valuable Team Player

The Fudan “Join Round Table” forum was created promote dialogue between the newly enrolled Fudan MBAs and professors or alumni, which will help the students achieve a deeper understanding of the talent development scheme of the Fudan MBA Program and get a clearer idea of their personal plan for both their study and career. The theme of the 4th episode of the “Join Round Table” was teamwork.

Professor Xu Qian from Department of Marketing noticed something interesting: student teams that do a great job in their projects often have a clear division of labor. That doesn’t necessarily mean each member does what he/she is best at, but more than often everyone is assigned a task that allows them to get out of their comfort zone and gain more sense of accomplishment. She encourages the students to neglect their comfort zone and embrace the challenges in teamwork.

For Professor Dou Yifan, Deputy Director of Department of Information Management and Business Intelligence, the best examples of teamwork have two qualities in common: effective communication; and working on the project with the actual feasibility during the landing phase in mind.

Professor Zhang Cheng, Director of Department of Information Management and Business Intelligence, advised the students to avoid the free riding attitude in teamwork. Meanwhile, it is also essential that the team leader inspire every team member to get out of the comfort zone and fight for the project goal.

Professor Wang Anyu from Department of Management Science reminded the students that a school project is a great opportunity to practise their management skills and try various roles in an organisation, and with very low or controllable error costs. Therefore, he encourages the students to willingly welcome the obstacles and navigate their way through the challenges, so as to sharpen their skills and achieve personal growth.
