Fudan MBA Join Round Table: Career Anchor

The Fudan MBA “Join Round Table” forum aims to offer guidance and advice from professors and alumni to the new Fudan MBAers of Class of 2024. In this new release, four alumni talked about their idea of career anchor, which represents one’s unique combination of perceived career competence, motives and values. We usually identify ourselves with one or a combination of the eight career anchor themes —technical/functional competence, general management competence, autonomy/independence, security/stability, entrepreneurial creativity, service/dedication to a cause, pure challenge, lifestyle — and are more fulfilled in our careers when we can satisfy our career anchors.

Zeng Song from the consulting industry believes it was his Fudan MBA study that helped him identify his career anchor. “I was going for general management competence, autonomy/independence, entrepreneurial creativity, pure challenge, all at the same time. Then during my self discovery at Fudan, I realized that what motivates me the most has always been pure challenge.”

Alumna of the Class of 2019 Pan Xiang believes her career anchor has shifted from security/stability and lifestyle to general management competence,autonomy/independence, entrepreneurial creativity, pure challenge since her Fudan MBA journey. Her self growth and new experience gained in the internet industry secured her the position of Sales Director of Software Defined Vehicles at Bosch.

Wu Di has been working for Hitachi Solutions for over a decade and is now General Manager of its cloud services. His experience at Fudan MBA helped him identify his career anchor as pure challenge, which has pushed him out of the comfort zone and has been motivating him to seek new adventures at his position.

Cheng Wenting, Sales Operations Manager at NXP Semiconductors, used to work for the service delivery department of Microsoft, and then Dell. Studying in the Fudan MBA Program inspired her to find her career anchor in general management competence and pure challenge, which triggered her big transition from the previous secure, routine positions to this more challenging role in a more rapidly-changing industry.
