Exploration of a Chinese Path to ESG

Over 500 alumni of Fudan University School of Management (FDSM) are working in faculties of universities and academic institutions around the world. Recently, a forum was held by the school specially for these alumni.

In the symposium themed “ESG and Sustainable Development”, the school invited the alumni to share their research findings and their insights on this issue.

Xing Shaowen, Deputy Director of the National Urban Soil Pollution Control and Remediation Engineering Technology Center, pointed out that the ESG principles are essentially in accordance with some traditional Chinese philosophies. Wang Ying, PwC Partner of Climate Change and Sustainability, identified the challenges encountered by enterprises willing to embrace the ESG principles nowadays, and offered a series of suggestions for Chinese enterprises to effectively design and implement an ESG strategy. Professor Chen Shouming from School of Economics and Management, Tongji University, brought light upon the importance of localisation of the ESG strategy for Chinese enterprises going abroad. Professor Qian Lixian from Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University focused his speech on whether the new energy vehicles are truly “green”, and shared his research on potential solution to their expansion to the lower-tier market in China.
