BI Facts and Figures 2006

The BI Norwegian School of Management / Handelshøyskolen BI is Norway’s leading academic institution in the core areas of economics, management, strategy, marketing, innovation and entrepreneurship. This enables BI to produce research-based knowledge and dynamic graduates capable of applying best practice methods in both the private and the public sectors.

BI’s goals are to become one of Europe’s foremost research-based schools of economics and business administration, based on the principle of lifelong learning. In 2005, BI was successfully reaccredited for a further five years by EQUIS, the independent international mark of quality of the European Foundation for Management Development. The committee of experts assessing BI’s application declared, “BI is an overall high quality institution, with very solid academic foundations and clearly above the standards of quality common in many EQUIS accredited schools”.

BI is an independent academic foundation which sees its task in society as creating value by encouraging interaction between research, studies, students, business and other members of society. Since its foundation in 1943, BI has consistently been interested in ways of uniting theory and practice.

In autumn 2005, BI Norwegian School of Management had 18,700 active students, of whom approximately half were women, attending courses at its 13 study centres in Norway. BI’s courses are provided via a countrywide network of study centres from Kristiansand in the south to Tromsø in the north and reflect local and regional needs. BI is also well established overseas and plays a major part in business education in both Lithuania and Shanghai in China. BI’s main campus is at Nydalen in Oslo, in a specially constructed building designed by the architect Niels Torp.

In autumn 2006, BI will offer 16 bachelor’s programs, two master’s courses (in Marketing, and Economics and Business Administration), five MSc courses and five PhD programs. BI also has its own niche academies in the areas of insurance, commodities, banking and finance, and shipping. BI also offers open access and specially designed further and continuing education, from short specialised courses to highly demanding and comprehensive MBAs (Master of Business Administration and Executive MBA programs). Through its BI Nettstudier courses, BI is one of the major Norwegian providers of net-based education.
