摘     要

We contend that CEOs who display more humility are more likely to appreciate female managers’ contributions and appoint more women to top management teams (TMTs).  Furthermore, we build upon theories and studies about strategic leadership to posit that CEO humility is more likely to increase TMT female representation when the CEO has greater power and is a woman. Drawing on role congruity theory that highlights societal-level effects for gendered expectations, we further identify important societal cultural values (i.e., masculinity and power distance values) as boundary conditions of the relationship between CEO humility and TMT female representation. Using a global sample of 195 CEOs (1,508 firm years) from 38 different countries and a novel, histrometric measure of CEO humility, we find support for our theoretical expectations.
