We are constantly influenced by the decision architecture to make irrational or biased decisions. Recent research conducted by Li Xilin and Xi Kaiyuan from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business shows that, people's judgments are often affected by non-essential factors such as appearance, nationality, gender, and so on.
According to the research, we can manipulate people’s choices and judgments by simply changing the order of appearance, or by presenting the options together in stead of separately, which clearly demonstrates the impact of decision architecture and the limitations of our cognitive rationality.
Therefore, managers and decision maker of the organization, as well as the decision-making process designers, need to take the potential impact of the decision structure into consideration. Since decision makers may not realize that they are affected by the non-relative factors, it is the designers’ responsibility to guide or even "boost" them to overcome the limitations of the rationality so as to help individuals, organizations, and the society to make fairer judgments and choices.
