Deconstruction-Creation of the Japanese Culture

In the episode of the forum “Insights in the Spring” by Fudan MBA Program, Professor Xu Jingbo, Vice Chairman of the Fudan University Japanese Studies Center, shared his insights on the deconstruction-creation of the Japanese culture with the Fudan MBA students through an online session.

Professor Xu started by analysing Japanese rock garden, Japanese tea ceremony and Ukiyo-e, three arts unique to Japan. Professor Xu pointed out that in the process of shaping these art forms, the Japanese absorbed foreign cultural elements, then deconstructed them and integrated them into native Japanese cultural elements.

In the interactive session, the students conducted in-depth discussions on the connotation of "deconstructionism". Professor Xu emphasized that the deconstruction in Japanese culture is not a simple destruction, but a fusion and creation after dismantling. By distinguishing the difference between drinking matcha and sencha, Professor Xu encouraged the students to conduct more intensive research on the cultural elements and social etiquette contained in the tea ceremony.
