From July 19 to July 22, 2005, the Wash U-Fudan EMBA Program hosted in Shanghai 35 senior managers from ESADE, a highly regarded business school in Barcelona Spain. The managers were all graduates of ESADE’s EMBA program and were in Shanghai to learn about doing business in China. The residency consisted of four morning sessions giving an overview of the unique strategy, human resources, marketing, and financial issues that firms face when they do business in China. In the afternoon of each day our visitors met with managers from a broad range of companies, who gave the students a feel for what it is really like to work in China. On Tuesday morning, Patrick Moreton, Asst. Dean from Washington University, started the residency with a broad overview of the strategic challenges of operating in China and a case study of Wahaha that explored some of the tools that foreign managers can use to plan their strategies for China. On Tuesday morning, Stella Hou of Hewitt Associates described the human resources environment in China for the students and Prof. Stuart Bunderson of Washington University provide them with his assessment of differences in the management tools used by managers in China and the US based on his teaching in Washington Universities EMBA-Shanghai and EMBA-St. Louis programs. On Thursday, Dean Xiongwen Lu of Fudan Management School spent the morning discussing his research on the Chinese consumer market, and on Friday morning, Andrew Qian and Haodong Gong (EMBA-Shanghai Class 1 alumni) of New Access Capital talked about ways that foreign companies can invest in China.
Among the speakers and companies that met with the students were Alex Zhu (EMBA-Shanghai Class 1 alumni) of Pernod-Ricard, who talked about the successful launch of Chivas-Regal Scotch in China. James Chie (EMBA-Shanghai Class 4) and Gareth Kung (Corporate Treasurer for SMIC) talked about the challenges for a company based in China when raising the large amounts of capital necessary for competing in the semiconductor industry. On Wednesday night, Chris Zhang (EMBA-Shanghai Class 4) arranged a talk by Cindy Lau, Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson China, who gave a very informative talk about the different segments in the China market and how Johnson & Johnson is positioning itself in China. On Thursday afternoon, Hector Ortiz (EMBA-Shanghai Class 4) arranged a visit by Edwin Chen, Senior correspondent for Reuters, who talked about China’s foreign exchange system on the same day that the RMB revaluation was announced. On Friday, the students were also hosted for a visit to Shanghai Huizhong Automotive Manufacturing Company by Jerry Hong (EMBA-Shanghai Class 4) who is director of purchasing. The residency concluded with a gala celebration on Friday night at the JW Marriot, where the visitors received a certificate of participation in the residency.
This residency was the first in a series that the program will be hosting each year for a select group of top tier business schools. Currently, ESADE’s full time MBA program is ranked 3rd in Europe by Business Week, and its graduates are among the most highly sought by recruiters in Europe. These residencies help the program and both Washington University and Fudan University position themselves among the top international programs in the world. The visitors from ESADE left with a very positive impression of the program here and the students and alumni we have. The program wishes to thank everyone who generously offered their time and opened up their companies to our visitors.
