It is 15 years since we started our educational activities in China. By now around 1 700 persons, mainly Chinese executives, have graduated from the MBA programme we teach in cooperation with School of Management at Fudan University in Shanghai! Now the cooperation is being developed further.
It is important for us to have succeeded in China. BI wants to be the leading educational partner for business and industry in Norway, and in that context our presence in China is important.
We are proud of what we have accomplished in cooperation with our Chinese partners. Not everyone has experienced success. In 2009 Business Week printed an article with the title “Why Western Business Schools are pulling out”. The title reflects the fact that many American schools, and even some of the best, gave up their efforts in China. They were never really able to understand the way the Chinese run their universities.
Our experience indicates that patience and respect are the most important keywords – patience to allow a tangible cooperation project to develop in a way that creates mutual trust and respect.
A brief historical outline: In 1995, Gro Harlem Brundtland, the then Prime Minister of Norway, visited China and participated in the opening of the Nordic Centre at Fudan University in Shanghai. About 20 universities from the Nordic Countries, and among them BI, jointly participated in establishing the Nordic Centre.
The following year we started to teach. In cooperation with Fudan University School of Management we established our first limited management course, which quickly developed into a full MBA programme. Currently, we are extending our cooperation with Fudan University to include cooperation on research, and a separate research centre is under development.
I would like to express my warmest congratulations to everyone involved in the BI-Fudan cooperation. I believe that the cooperation will prosper also in the future. Happy 15 years anniversary!

Today, the growing importance and influence of China is evident to everyone.  While Norway’s challenge on the international scene is to make ourselves visible in strong competition with much larger countries, China is in a position to choose partners from the top shelf.

In a number of areas, however, China and Norway have common interests. This certainly applies for international cooperation within research and education, where new Sino-Norwegian initiatives are introduced on a regular basis. When it comes to the sharing of knowledge and ideas, quality is obviously more important than size!

This explains the extensive relations between Chinese and Norwegian researchers in such diverse fields as climate, environment, renewable energy and polar research. I am also pleased to notice that higher education co-operation is a growing field of interest.

The fifteen years of collaboration between Fudan University’s School of Management and the Norwegian Business School (BI) clearly illustrate that research and higher education cooperation can be of mutual benefit to both countries.

Aristotle said about friendship: “Wishing to be friends is quick work, but friendship is a slow ripening fruit.” I believe this to be a fair statement also when it comes to cooperation – and particularly when it comes to international cooperation.

The bonds between the Fudan School of Management and the Norwegian Business School have already harvested a lot of ripened fruits. I congratulate both institutions on their fifteenth anniversary of collaboration – and hope you will enjoy even more seeding and harvesting, through strengthening of the existing relations and through new partnerships, in the years to come.

Minister of Research and Higher Education
Norway

My warmest congratulations to BI Norwegian Business School and Fudan University School of Management on their 15 years of fruitful cooperation.

Since 1996, BI has been pioneering Norwegian academic cooperation with China through their programmes at Fudan University. Among others, BI has developed a highly esteemed Master of Business Administration (MBA), educating more than 1700 highly qualified business executives from China and abroad. BI is also an important contributor in building interest and knowledge about China in Norway, in particular among young students.

I wish BI and Fudan School of Management the best of luck for this important anniversary, and trust that the future will bring even broader cooperation to the benefit of Sino-Norwegian relations!

Yours sincerely,

Svein O. Sæther
Ambassador of Norway
