Title：Geometry of Resource Scheduling in Service Systems
Abstract: A key issue in service systems, ranging from information services and cloud computing to classical services and logistics, is the dynamic allocation of resources over short temporal scales and immense structural scales. The fundamental tradeoff is that of service delay vs. cost of allocated resources. The arising problems are mostly combinatorial in nature, leading to intractable complexities.
We explore the delay vs. cost tradeoff and discuss how to systematically and robustly manage throughput and cost to maintain acceptable delays under arbitrary service request traffic variations and bursts. A key vehicle in this discussion is the realization that -- despite its combinatorial nature -- resource allocation inherently has an interesting geometric structure, which must be leveraged appropriately.
