Abstract:Classical operations management models share a foundational assumption: the institutional environment is stable and exogenous. That assumption no longer holds. Trade wars, economic sanctions, and geopolitical fragmentation have turned the institutional environment itself into a major source of supply chain disruption. This talk presents an empirical research program on supply chain resilience under geopolitics, organized around three propositions. Proposition I: Transmission. Supply chains transmit far more than goods. Demand signals, financial risks, and geopolitical shocks propagate through the same firm-to-firm networks. Proposition II: Strategy. Geopolitics is no longer merely an external constraint on supply chain decisions; it has become an integral strategic consideration. Conversely, supply chains have become instruments through which states exercise economic power. Proposition III: Mechanism. Resilience is not redundancy. It emerges from the interaction of network architecture, financial flexibility, and decision intelligence. The talk concludes with several open questions at the research frontier.
Bio:Jing Wu is Full Professor at CUHK Business School and Associate Director of the Asian Institute of Supply Chains and Logistics. He received his PhD in Management Science and Economics from the University of Chicago and his bachelor in Electronic Engineering from Tsinghua University. His research advances the empirical study of global supply chains and operations-finance interface, and has been featured by more than 400 media outlets across over 20 countries. He serves as Associate Editor at Management Science and M&SOM, Senior Editor at Production and Operations Management, and Founding Chair of the Workshop on Empirical Operations Management. He is also the founder of GlobalLink.AI, a LLM for supply chain intelligence.
