Recently, students and alumni of the Fudan University- Washington University EMBA Program visited ByteDance Shanghai Headquarters together with Professor Markus Baer, Associate Dean of Executive Education and Professor of Organizational Behavior at Olin Business School, Washington University in St. Louis. They discussed how enterprises can build sustainable development strategies amid the AI wave. The alumni held in-depth exchanges with product R&D staff about the latest AI intelligent tools.
At ByteDance’s corporate exhibition hall, alumni immersed themselves in product experiences including Douyin live streaming rooms, AI tool Doubao, and VR headsets. Staff delivered a systematic overview covering product R&D and product development strategies, with a special focus on how AI technology empowers product and technology research and development. By flexibly integrating AI with diverse user interfaces according to users’ usage scenarios and needs, the company can continuously deliver rapidly evolving user experiences.
After the exhibition hall tour, Alex Zhu, Vice President of Product and Strategy at ByteDance, delivered a themed presentation titled “ByteDance Products and AI” to the alumni. He noted that today’s requirements for AI technology development differ drastically from the product feature development priorities in the company’s early days. ByteDance places strong emphasis on data-driven business decision-making. Data not only helps ByteDance optimize its products but is also applied to corporate management and organizational design. Furthermore, ByteDance’s continuous innovation is inextricably linked to its corporate culture. The company has long fostered an innovative, egalitarian and diverse culture, which serves as a key enabler for incubating new products and technologies.
Professor Markus Baer then shared insights from his teaching and research. He held a brief discussion with participants drawing on case studies from his organizational leadership course. He mentioned that igniting organizational vitality requires establishing shared goals and vision for the team. Specifically, three dimensions of management are essential:
First, role management: minimize reliance on job titles to foster an egalitarian and diverse organizational culture and encourage communication among employees. Second, objective management: prioritize the rationality of goals. Once the right goals are set, align internal resources across the organization. Third, incentive management: ByteDance values the impact of incentives on boosting employee productivity and strengthening intrinsic motivation.
Therefore, corporate culture acts as an invisible engine for long-term growth and plays a critical role in driving business scaling and sustainable development.
Students and alumni commented that this immersive off-campus site visit allowed them to deeply experience how AI empowers corporate growth. It also offered abundant inspiration on how enterprises in their respective industries can embrace AI innovation.
