TitleEffect of product sharing on production capacity in a distribution channel

Abstract:Consumers often buy and own products but do not fully utilize them. In recent years, collaborative consumption among consumers has become very prevalent in the economy. A product owner’s self-use values can differ over time, and in a period of low self-use value, she may rent out her purchased product in a product-sharing market. This paper develops an analytical framework to study the effects of product sharing among consumers in a distribution channel, where the upstream manufacturer needs to build its production capacity before the product can be produced and sold. Our analysis reveals that, interestingly, product sharing will lead to an increase in the manufacturer’s capacity and higher unit sales by the retailer when production capacity is relatively costly to build, in which case the consumer surplus and the social welfare will increase. In addition, product sharing among consumers tends to increase the retailer’s share of the total gross profit margin in the channel, and is more likely to benefit the retailer than the manufacturer.
