We invite scholars to exchange and share their experience and knowledge in exploring business strategies and antitrust enforcement in the context of the platform economy:
Platform businesses have gained considerable prominence in recent years. Digital platforms have emerged as dominant players in various important markets, accumulating a significant volume of data and resources. Consequently, concerns about the potential for monopolistic conduct have prompted major economies worldwide, including the United States, the European Union, and China, to recognize the imperative of reexamining antitrust enforcement in the platform economy.
The challenges generated by market concentration in the platform economy give rise to new questions for the enforcement of antitrust regulations. Each platform market possesses distinct features, often concerned with information flows, pricing, and privacy, necessitating detailed economic research to capture these differences. While researchers and practitioners have made considerable progress in exploring the intricacies of this issue, the rapid evolution of antitrust practices in the platform economy still calls for advancements in economic studies.

This special issue is organized by the School of Management at Fudan University. This special issue is devoted to articles that employ novel models and empirical approaches to analyze the impact of business strategies and the role of antitrust enforcement in the context of the platform economy. The indicative topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • The impact of the development of the platform economy on antitrust regulation and enforcement;
  • The evolution of platform business models and strategies in recent years;
  • Empirical examination of the competitive dynamics and managerial decisions in platform markets;
  • The market structure of platform markets and the assessment of market-dominant positions;
  • The abusive uses of market dominance in platform markets and theories of harm for platforms;
  • The nature of data-driven mergers in digital markets and the relevant antitrust review processes;
  • The implementation of pricing algorithms and remedies for algorithmic tacit collusion;
  • Empirical analysis of the effectiveness of antitrust enforcement in the platform economy;
  • The innovation of antitrust regulatory methodologies and analytical tools, particularly the use of AI and big data technologies.
  • The research on consumer privacy issues, especially the welfare implications of privacy protection and cookie usage, in the antitrust analysis of digital platforms.
