题    目：Quality Innovation, Cost Innovation, Exporting, and Firm Productivity Evolution: Evidence from the Chinese Electronics Industry

摘    要：This paper classifies innovation as quality-improving (introduces a new product/function or improves the quality of an existing product/function) or cost-reducing(improves production efficiency or reduces production cost), and structurally estimates a dynamic model incorporating firm export,cost innovation, and quality innovation decisions. Estimation results show that export, cost innovation, and quality innovation respectively increase next-period firm productivity by 1.23%, 1.27% and 1.39%. Quality innovation has the additional effect of raising next-period export demand by 47%. Counterfactual analyses suggest foreign market growth significantly raise participation in export and innovation, but has little effect on firm productivity. A comparison of various export and innovation policies reveals that subsidizing continuing quality innovators generates the highest financial return - for each yuan spent on subsidy cost,the policy generates a profit gain of 43 yuan, while subsidizing continuing cost innovators brings the highest productivity gain-a 20% subsidy to innovation cost improves firm productivity by 3% after 15 years.

主讲人简介：Mengxiao Liu got her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Toronto in 2017. She is currently an Assistant Professor at Syracuse University and will be joining the College of Business at Lehigh University in August 2022. Her research interests include global supply chains, innovation, firm productivity, and the application of network theory. Her recent papers have been published in journals including the European Economic Review and Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization.
