主   题：HOW DO I OPEN A WINDOW WHEN YOU SHUT A DOOR? CHINESE FIRMS’ EXPORTS AND IMPORTS IN RESPONSE TO U.S. ECONOMIC SANCTIONS ON THIRD COUNTRIES

摘   要：

It is widely known that economic sanctions have significant impacts on firms in both the sanctioning and the sanctioned countries. Of interest, however, is how firms from others countries respond to such prominent bilateral conflicts. In this study, we tackle this intriguing yet understudied question by exploring how Chinese firms respond to economic sanctions enforced by the United States on a third country by adjusting their imports from and exports to the sanctioned country. Synthesizing the insights of the resource dependence theory and the global supply chain literature, we propose that Chinese firms would increase their imports from a foreign country sanctioned by the U.S. to enhance their dependence advantages and influence on the global sourcing networks, and decrease their exports to the sanctioned country to avoid dependence on uncertain foreign markets. We further posit that such reactions would be contingent on the focal firms’ dependence on the U.S. market, as well as the bilateral coopetition between China and the U.S. Results from the difference-in-differences (DID) analyses based on Chinese firms’ trade records between 2006 and 2016 largely support our theoretical predictions.               

简   介：

姜翰教授于2014年在亚利桑那州立大学凯瑞商学院获得博士学位。在加入香港中文大学（深圳）之前，他曾在美国杜兰大学和亚利桑那大学担任教职。姜翰教授致力于社会网络、组织间关系、公司治理与战略决策、国际商务和创业等方面的研究，过去十年间在UTD、FT列表期刊上发表十余篇学术论文。姜翰教授积极担任顶级学术期刊和学术会议的编辑和领导职责。自2021年底以来，他担任Asia Pacific Journal of Management的高级编辑。同时，他还是Strategic Management Journal和Management and Organization Review的编委会成员。自2021年以来，他还一直担任中国管理研究国际学会宏观研究委员会委员，并担任将在2024年6月召开的亚洲管理学会双年会战略领域主席。
