摘   要：

We study network interoperability in a general framework of multi-sided platforms. The equilibrium prices in such a framework often exhibit “cross-subsidization” among multiple sides of users. We show that the impact of network interoperability on prices and welfare depends on the shape of network externality functions and the degree of market fragmentation. If network externalities obey diminishing marginal effects or if the market is highly fragmented, interoperability weakens cross-subsidization. This raises prices and reduces surplus for user sides that generate positive outbound externalities, but reduces prices and raises surplus for user sides that generate negative outbound externalities. Under the opposite market conditions, interoperability strengthens cross-subsidization, reversing the price and surplus implications above. Similar insights apply when considering network interoperability wideness (i.e., more platforms engage in the same interoperability coalition). We use the framework to examine the divergence between private and social incentives for interoperability, among other regulatory issues.
