摘要Personality traits—relatively stable patterns of behaviors, thoughts and feelings that distinguish one person from another—play a crucial role in shaping human attitudes, behavior, and well-being. Yet, organizational research has been heavily influenced by the five-factor model that treats personality traits solely as endogenous dispositions not directly influenced by the environment. In light of the paradigm shift in personality science that focuses on both the stability and malleability of personality traits, this classic dispositional perspective of personality has hindered the development of organizational personality research.

In this talk, I will share our on-gong research that meta-analyzes reciprocal relationships between big five personality traits and income with a continuous time approach using random-intercept cross-lagged panel models (K = 11, N ≈ 134,000). We found positive socialization effects of income on subsequent changes of conscientiousness and emotional stability, and the effect on extraversion was negative. The selection effect of conscientiousness and emotional stability on subsequent income changes was positive, and the effect was negative for extraversion, suggesting reciprocal relationships between the three personality traits and income. The magnitude of the effects varied over time in an inverted-U shaped fashion. Our research showcases the importance and promise of taking a dynamic perspective in organizational personality research.

嘉宾简介李文东教授是香港中文大学的终身教授。曾在美国堪萨斯州立大学任教。他的研究兴趣主要集中在领导力、主动性、工作设计、个体特征、以及AI和零工经济等方面。

他的研究发表于国际顶尖的管理学和综合科学性期刊,包括《美国科学院院刊》(PNAS),《人格与社会心理学》(JPSP),《应用心理学》(JAP),《组织心理学和组织行为学年鉴》,和《哈佛商业评论》等。研究成果为多家国内外媒体报道,包括《经济学人》、《今日美国》、《洛杉矶时报》以及《南华早报》等。他的研究多次获得国际学术组织的重要奖项,包括美国管理学会(Academy of Management)的国际人力资源学术成就奖以及美国工业组织心理学会(Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology)的Hogan人格和工作绩效奖以及最近的Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award for Excellence in Work-Family Research奖等。他目前是多个杂志的副主编(Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, Management and Organizational Review, 和 Asia Pacific Journal of Management)以及多个期刊的编委会成员(JAP, Personnel Psychology, 心理学报、Fundamental Research及PNAS Nexus等)。
