内容摘要:The essence of a community lies in the interactions and understanding among its participants. Unlike traditional AI tools with functional roles, GAI possess human-like social presence and actively engage in community discussions, introducing a novel AI adoption to social interactions. This study addresses a critical question: Does the inclusion of GAI promote greater consensus or stimulate opinion diversity among community members? Using data from the introduction of GAI in June 2023 on an Asian social platform, we employ text analysis and a difference-in-differences (DID) approach to empirically demonstrate GAI’s positive impact on subsequent human opinion diversity. Our findings reveal that GAI’s emotionally neutral and contextually consistent responses intensify opinion divergence, contrasting with prior studies where human or AI-generated content primarily served functional purposes. Extending from social identity theory by incorporating non-human social actors into the framework of in-group and out-group dynamics, we explain how AI social members (ASMs)’s outgroup perception drives users to differentiate their views, particularly in subjective topics and communities with high-clustering subgroups. Furthermore, ASM-induced opinion diversity positively correlates with higher-quality content creation and increased language offensiveness, underscoring the dual consequences of ASM.
