摘要:Hybrid work, under which employees work in the office on some days and remotely on others, is now a common arrangement, but its impact on workplace interactions remains underexplored. This talk examines how daily work location affects these dynamics, especially for newer employees. Drawing on the theory of copresence, my coauthor and I investigate whether working in the office increases coworker knowledge-sharing and, in turn, positively predicts perceived insider status and job performance. We conduct a ten-day experience-sampling study and a vignette experiment, capturing both employee and coworker perspectives. The findings reveal that daily work location shapes daily relational mechanisms and performance differently for newer vs. experienced employees, regardless of where their coworkers are working. These findings highlight the relational symbolism of being in office (beyond physical co-location with coworkers), and clarify how knowledge-sharing processes operate differently in office vs. remote settings. Toward the end of the talk, I will also briefly share about my other current projects related to family-friendly workplace policies (hybrid work, parental or caregiving leave schemes, etc.).
