Theory and Application

Abstract:We develop a tractable model of a platform, like an app store, where heterogeneous sellers and consumers interact. Sellers vary in quality and face entry costs, while consumers differ in willingness to pay for quality and usage intensity. The platform sets a consumer participation fee and an ad valorem commission on sellers. We characterize the equilibrium allocations and
fees, and illustrate a key ratio of seller revenue to consumer surplus governing distortions in seller and consumer participation. We study the implications of cap regulations on commissions, allowing an own-payment channel for sellers, and the platform selling its apps.
Bio:Simon Anderson is the Commonwealth professor of economics at the University of Virginia. He works on theoretical applied microeconomics and industrial organization in particular. His work has been primarily in the economics of product, differentiation, search, and advertising. He co-authored a book for MIT press on Discrete Choice Theory of Product Differentiation, and he continues to work in variations of discrete choice models like the logit, and the CES model. He also works on media economics and has co-organized a series of conferences internationally in Media Economics: he was co-editor of the Handbook of Media Economics for Elsevier. Another conference series in which he is still actively engaged as coordinator is on the Economics of Advertising and Marketing, which brings together internationally prominent scholars in marketing and in theoretical and empirical economics.
