摘   要：

Although there is evidence that CEO inventors with hands-on innovation experience facilitate firm innovation, extant studies have ignored CEO free-riders who do not put effort into innovation but share the results. This paper aims to fill this gap by examining the effects of CEO’s free-riding in R&D activities on corporate invention outcomes. Leveraging the unique data of matched invention patents and employee inventors of Chinese listed firms, our results suggest that CEO’s free-riding in innovation undermines the innovativeness of the focal firm's invention outcomes. We further explore the underlying mechanisms and reveal that CEO’s free-riding in innovation leads employee inventors to turnover from the current employer and also lowers the productivity of employee inventors, thus deteriorating firm innovation. Moreover, we investigate boundary conditions that may shape employee inventors’ behavior and find that the adverse effects of CEO’s free-riding on firm innovation are more pronounced for firms in high-technology industries and firms with great R&D intensity, as well as firms with better developed local labor market. The current study contributes to the literature on inventor CEOs and has important managerial implications.
