Abstract:
Service platforms such as carpooling, food delivery, and video game matchmaking face a fundamental trade-off: matching requests immediately minimizes waiting costs, while delaying matches thickens the market and reduces spatial or feature-distance costs. We study this delay-distance trade-off through a continuous-time spatial matching model where requests arrive stochastically in Euclidean space. To evaluate performance, we first establish a policy-independent lower bound on the optimal long-run average cost that captures the fundamental limits of spatial matching. We then design and analyze practical matching policies under two information regimes. When the arrival rate and spatial density are unknown, we analyze the bubble policy, proving strong nonasymptotic and asymptotic competitive ratios by exploiting its regenerative steady-state structure. When the arrival rate and spatial density are known, we introduce a mesoscopic localization framework to analyze the radius, partition, and batching policies, demonstrating that local density-aware adaptations yield strong constant competitive guarantees. Finally, numerical experiments using both synthetic and real-world data support our theoretical findings and provide managerial insights into the operational strengths of each policy.
