• Fusion and development of East and West management

    On July 27 and 28, the school represented parent Fudan University to host the 9th meeting of IFSAM, a so-called highest-ranking fiesta in the management field of the world.

    It was the first time that a Chinese university has played the hosting role for the IFSAM meeting, which stands for International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management, a global organization composed of the most representing management groups from 33 nations and regions. Chinese mainland was one of the first to join IFSAM.

    Approximately, 500 managing experts, scholars, entrepreneurs and government officials were present at the meeting, among who were 22 professors from overseas universities and 22 other leaders and famed professors from domestic universities.

    Themed in “The fusion and development of East and West Management,” the meeting divided into 20 special forums and the Oriental Management Forum.

    HAN Qide, vice chairman of The National People's Congress, LI Wuwei, vice chairman of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, WANG Jiarui, head of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, AI Baojun, vice mayor of Shanghai, QIN Shaode, Chancellor of Fudan University, WU Youfu, Party secretary of Shanghai International Studies University, and President WANG Hong of Shanghai University of Engineering Science, were present at the opening ceremony of the meeting.

    Fudan’s Chief Professor SU Dongshui, who was chairman of the 9th IFSAM meeting, said during the opening ceremony: “It is a great meeting of the largest scale ever held by the Chinese management academia. It is to open a new page on the history of Chinese management development, and play an important role in pushing forward the management education and business development in China.

    “The meeting seeks to lay a foundation for furthering cooperation between China and the outside world, melting the Eastern management essence with the West, and diverting the trend of Westernization in current management education.”

    Professor SU added that, the meeting would also help expand the concept of Oriental Management, which is focused on Chinese excellent core of culture.

    Professor LU Xiongwen, dean of Fudan’s School of Management and vice chairman of the organizing committee for the 9th IFSAM meeting, said: “IFSAM management meeting is ‘Olympic Games’ in the field of management of the world, and our school sees it a great pleasure to host such a high-level meeting before the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

     “We are looking forward to joining professors, scholars and entrepreneurs from more than 30 IFSAM member nations at the meeting, and displaying to the world the charming elements of Oriental Management.”

    He added that, the school is continuing to follow the track of business development around the world, focus on domestic social and economic growth trend and business reform process, speed up the construction of theoretical management system based on Chinese market transformation and progress, and share the expertise with peers from home and abroad.

    On the opening ceremony, WANG Jiarui, head of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, delivered the report of “The fusion and development of Chinese and Western management in the trend of globalization, and Professor SU Dongshui delivered the report of “The innovation and practice of fusion in East and West management – 30 years of discovery in Oriental Management.”

    Lundin, Rolf A., chairman of 2003-2004 IFSAM, joined to report his findings on development trend in Western management.

    On the July 27 afternoon, the 12th Oriental Management Forum was unfurled, and Professor SU, President WANG Hong of Shanghai University of Engineering Science, and Professor Chung-ying Cheng of University of Hawaii, delivered their keynote speeches.

    Entrepreneurs from domestically famous companies like Alibaba’s CEO WEI Zhe, and GE’s Money China Managing Director Shaun Tan, attended the forum.

    A number of Chinese- and English-speaking special forums were conducted on July 28.
