The Department of Financial Management was established in 1993, the succession to the discipline of Finance in the Department of Economic Management. The graduates from the department are now working for industrial and trading companies, domestic and overseas-invested financial institutions, in the field of finance.

The department provides Chrematistics program for undergraduate students. Students are required to be familiarized with theories and practice of financing in China and overseas regarding its history, status quo and the trend of future development, to understand financing-related laws, regulations and policies, before becoming an all-round player with profound knowledge in financial theories and modern financial concepts, who is able to carry out business by means of advanced financial technologies.

Overseas scholars are exchanged and invited to deliver lectures to the students, bringing in the information about up-to-date academic development around the world. Students are also teamed up to organize social surveys and join in management consultations and internships.

The Department of Management Science was established in 1979, one of the earliest of its kind in China. It built up China's first Management Science doctoral station and started enrolling PhD students in 1985 when the School of Management was established at Fudan University. In 1996, it continued to build up China's also first Management Science and Engineering post-doctoral mobile station. In 2000, it completed the "211 Project" of Theoretical Economics and Management Science. During the 2000-2002 period, part of its disciplinary research is entitled to "985 Projects".

The past years of efforts have resulted into major progress in the directions of disciplinary advancement, talent imports, scientific research and postgraduate incubation, and the department is aiming to become an innovative research and teaching team which stays in line with international standards, focuses on solutions for practical management issues of China and emphasizes on cross-disciplinary functions. Currently, there are there are 26 teachers in the department including 12 full professors (including　10 PhD supervisors) and　9 associate professors and 5 lecturers　working in the department, teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, and enrolling post-doctoral researchers in four teaching and research directions of Management Science and Engineering, Logistics and Operations Management, Operations Research and Cybernetics, and Technological Economy and Management.

Management Science applies various scientific methods (for example, analysis, experiments, and quantification) to design and operate all kinds of systems to meet an optimal purpose. It deals with human, materials and capital resources in a systematic way, provides best-of-best solutions for decision-makers, so as to realize the most effectively sound management.

The chief goal of the department is to cultivate the potential senior decision-makers and technical specialists in the management field. The students will be capable of applying the advanced management theories, systematic methods, quantitative models, and information technology to process corporate governance and social economic activities. To do that, students have to command a solid foundation of basic knowledge, practical specialized instruments, besides the knowledge of accounting, financing, production and planning, marketing and sales, as well as Operations Research, Statistics, and computer appliance management.

As one of the longest-existing department at Fudan University, the Department of Business Administration was originated from the Department of Industrial and Commercial Management which was created in 1920 and later transferred to the Department of Business Administration in 1993.

Currently, the department has a PhD program in Business Administration, two MPHIL programs in Business Administration and International Business respectively, and one Bachelor's Degree program of Business Administration. There are 15 faculty members working in the department, including 8 full professors (7 are PhD supervisors), 4 associate professors. 14 out of them received PhD degrees from domestic or overseas universities, and most of them have overseas experience in study or training. The main directions of disciplinary research include international business, strategic management, human resources management, organizational behavior, corporate culture, management ethics, and management communication.

Since establishment, the department has piled up a lot of progress during the process of conducting national-level projects in natural science and social science foundations, as well as ministerial and Shanghai-level social science research projects. Many of its faculty members are honorees of national awards, like first prize of national teaching excellence, first prize of Shanghai excellent books in philosophy and social science. The textbooks compiled by department faculty members have claimed first or second prizes awarded by Ministry of Education.

The department keeps a close eye on interactions with counterparts from overseas business schools, and tracks front-running management theoretical and practice issues. Domestic and international scholars are invited on a frequent basis to lecture in the department, and famous academic units and enterprises from home and abroad are often contacted for exchanges.

The department is to prepare students with essential skills in modern business management as an all-round management talent. Backed with internationalized education standards, the department is to equip the students with understandings of international business, modern technological means, as well as a global vision, in order to satisfy the needs of corporate development of today. The department finds international competence, multi-culture, rapid adaptation and innovation to be roots of most of its course teaching.

The Department of Statistics and Data Science was initiated in 1983, being one of the earliest which provided mathematical statistics and data science education for undergraduates in China. Since then, more than 400 professionals in statistics have been produced. The department has 13 faculties, including 4 professors, 4 associate professors and 5 lecturers.

The Department of Statistics and Data Science is the basic for modern economics and management science. The students have to command fundamental management knowledge, statistical and data science theories and skills, be able to process data via computers. After graduation, they will be able to work for governmental units, enterprises, financial management sector in fields of statistical analysis and management, or work for scientific research institutions in fields of academic research and teaching. Master and PhD degrees are conferred.

Established in June of 2003, the Department of Applied Economics finds its pride in the discipline of Applied Economics, which for the third time was chosen to be one of national-level key disciplines in 2007 after 1988 and 2001 – the only one of such at Fudan University. There are 1 second-level PhD program, 2 master-degree programs, one post-doctoral mobile station in the discipline. There are 15 faculty members at the department, including 4 PhD supervisors.

The Department of Applied Economics is primarily designed to nurture master-degree and PhD-degree students. The department is dedicated to building up specialized courses and key scientific researches, delivering high-quality academic achievements as well as excellent graduate students for applied economics. The department is also building up a domestically top-class faculty team characterized with being creative and innovative, plus being highly balanced of ages and rational levels of ranking.

Goal of disciplinary construction:

Aiming at the world's top level, the discipline tries to develop itself in line with international standards, producing first-class research in terms of originality and influence. Meanwhile, the discipline tries to cultivate professional talents in applied economics for the benefit of national and social economic progress, and build itself into the best of its kind in China and one of the most influential disciplines on the global stage.

Disciplinary construction plans:

The long-term strategy of disciplinary development is to focus on the four fields of research, which are: value modules and industrial chain integration, strategic behaviors and regulations, industrial innovation and knowledge network, industrial growth and competitiveness. To do that, the famous economists from the department, like Professor RUI Mingjie, Professor YU Yihong, Professor YIN Xingmin, Professor HU Jianji and Professor LUO Pinliang have been teamed up to supervise and get involved in the research work, to win more support from national Natural Science Foundation and Social Science Foundation to move forward the disciplinary progress.

The discipline aims to produce more high-level research papers in terms of originality. The articles should be published on international and domestic key periodicals, and they provide concepts and solutions for the realistic economic issues in industries.

More and more academic exchange events will be mobilized in both national and international scales, and more talents will be brought in to form a multi-tier research team. Efforts will be pooled into tracking most up-to-date development in the field of applied economics, and at the same time building up a knowledge cooperation and innovation mechanism.

The discipline tries to cultivate high-level professional talents who are to meet the demands set by national economic growth, and the demands to improve theoretical research and teaching capabilities. More efforts are to put to develop and improve the quality of curricular materials, as well as the innovation of teaching methods and curricular structure.

The Department of Accounting enjoys a history of more than 70 years, and has cultivated a considerable number of well-known accounting scholars, certified public accountant and senior management professionals both home and abroad. It had stopped operations for 40 years before it was rejuvenated in 1993 with an aim to enable its students to practice accounting in line with the international standards, under the guideline of inter-disciplinary functions.

Currently, the department has 3 teaching and research groups, including Financial Accounting, Cost Management Accounting, and International Accounting. There are 4 full professors (all are PhD supervisors), one adjunct PhD supervisor, 4 associate professors, and 5 lecturers. Among them, 6 have PhD degrees ( 2 out of them have received PhD degrees in accounting from overseas well-known universities), 4 are studying for their PhD degrees.

The faculty members of department are now involved to conduct 3 national-level scientific research projects, several social science research projects approved by Ministry of Education and Shanghai City Government. They have participated in compiling textbooks supported by the ministry, and received many city-level awards for teaching and research excellence. Professor LI Ruoshan was China's first to graduate with a PhD degree in auditing, who has been awarded by State Council for outstanding contribution in his teaching and research career.

There are 200 bachelor students, 50 master students and 20 PhD students who are now studying in the department. The bachelor students have to complete certain amount of credits before graduation.

As a way to adapt to the internationalizing trend in the accounting field and put to the full play the inter-disciplinary advantages of Fudan University, English is widely applied into daily teaching work. Original English textbooks are used in all of the core courses, and the students learn to improve accounting skills according to international accounting rules, which enables them to work for foreign invested companies, multinationals, accounting firms and publicly listed ones.

The master students have to learn further specialized knowledge which is including but not restricted to such courses as: intermediate financial accounting (English), advanced financial accounting (English), cost management accounting (English), auditing (English), intermediate financial management (English), financial statement analysis (English), and international accounting (English).

The master-degree study is divided into two directions: international accounting, accounting and capital market research, including such degree courses as: empirical methodology of accounting research, advanced financial accounting, advanced managerial accounting, international comparative accounting, and special topics on international accounting. The master graduates are able to work for accounting firms, foreign invested companies, senior accounting positions in multinationals, as well as in higher educational institutions and scientific research organizations.

The PhD-degree study is focused on accounting and auditing theories. The PhD supervisors are including Professor LI Ruoshan, ZHANG Wenxian, Professor ZHOU Hong, and Professor ZHOU Qinye (adjunct).

Since 1980's Fudan University has been offering master and Ph.D. programs in marketing, and the Department of Marketing was officially established in 1999. Currently the department has its own undergraduate and master programs in marketing, together with a Ph.D. program in business administration specializing in marketing. The department now has a faculty of 23 consisting of 4 full professors (all of whom are Ph.D. supervisors), 11 associate professors, and 8 assistant professors. Harboring research institutions including The Marketing Research Center of China (in cooperation with China Marketing Association), Research Center for Service Marketing and Management, and Behavioral Science Laboratory of Fudan University (under construction), the Department of Marketing is exerting vast academic and social influence on the field of marketing.

The undergraduate program aims to train highly-skilled talents with a broad knowledge of management, a solid ground of modern marketing, and a sharp global view based on China's marketing practices. Graduate students of the department are expected to have: a) a profound knowledge of modern marketing theories and qualitative and quantitative analytical methods in marketing; b) strong skills in speaking and writing, interpersonal communication, and practical skills in analyzing and solving problems in marketing; c) good command of at least one foreign language; and d) a basic knowledge of data and literature search, the ability to conduct scientific research, and strong professional skills.

The vision of the Department of Marketing at Fudan University is to become a top-ranking marketing research and education base in China with international influence. The department actively promotes academic collaboration with peer institutions in and outside of China. By jointly hosting The Marketing Scholars Forum with Hong Kong University and Peking University, and Shanghai Service Symposium---Creating Value through Service with Center for Services Leadership at Arizona State University, the department has established a podium for disseminating ideas in marketing theories and practices in China.

The Department of Marketing currently undertakes one key program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, i.e. A Research on the Chinese Urban Consumer Behavior - Exploration from the Perspectives of Social Identity and Social Identification, and over 10 programs of the National Natural Science Foundation and Philosophy and Social Science Foundation, as well as other research programs of the Ministry of Education of China and Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, all of which have been yielding significant results.

The Department of Information Management and Business Intelligence (IM&BI) tracks its roots back to the discipline of Management Information System founded in 1985, which was then a major in the Department of Management Science.

Currently there are 3 full professors, 6 associate professors and 6 lecturers in the department. All the faculty members hold PhD degrees. Some of them earned their PhD degrees from universities in North America and Singapore. Most faculty members have oversea experience visiting foreign universities and research institutes.

The department aims at equipping the students with a solid foundation in mathematics and proficient computer skills. Students are expected to acquire broad knowledge of management and systematic skills in the application and management of information systems.

Faculty members in the department conduct a variety of research on the application and management of modern information technology (IT) / information systems (IS) (including e-commerce), the objective of which is to provide enterprises with guidance on utilizing IT/IS to improve their competitiveness and managerial skills. Specifically, the faculties conduct teaching and research in such fields as fundamental theories, business models, IT/IS strategy, IT/IS management, IS development, and IT applications.

The department confers bachelor degrees and master degrees in the major of Information Management and Business Intelligence (IM&BI). The department also has PhD program and offers post-doctoral research opportunities.

The objective of the IM&BI major is to prepare the students to be capable of:

Discovering IT/IS solutions and bringing managerial insight to counter challenges in enterprises;

Developing IS, including analyzing and designing IS and programming;

Managing information/IS, including managing information resources, and implementing, maintaining and evaluating IS;

Conducting scientific research.

Students majoring in IM&BI are expected to build solid mathematical foundation and acquire systematic knowledge in mathematical analysis, applied statistics and operations research; acquire proficient computer skills including the development and application of computer hardware and software, database, telecommunication networks, and e-commerce technology; acquire broad knowledge of modern business administration, including business strategy, production and operations management, marketing, finance and accounting; attain systematic understanding of IS applications and management, including management information systems, system analysis and design, information resources management, ERP, e-commerce, system models and simulation, decision support systems, and strategic plan and implementation of information systems.
