He is among the first generation of "gardeners" in the reconstruction of Chinese sociology after the reform and opening-up. For over forty years, shuttling between the study and the field, he has measured the land with his footsteps, recording the most turbulent changes in Chinese society. He has always insisted on conducting scholarship on the vast land of China. From the psychological changes of farmers in Jiangsu and Zhejiang to the acclaimed "Reverse Cultural Feeding" theory, he deeply discerned the subversive changes in intergenerational relations, providing a classic explanatory paradigm for Chinese society in transition. He served as the editor-in-chief of monumental works such as History of Chinese Sociology, systematically sorting out the disciplinary lineage and answering the fundamental proposition of "where Chinese sociology comes from and where it is going." His rigorous academic contributions provide deep logic for understanding the changes of the times.
Taking Yiwu's transformation from "exchanging chicken feathers for sugar" to a "World's Supermarket" as an example, Professor Zhou revealed the unique path of Chinese modernization. He pointed out that the "Yiwu Miracle" originated from the resonance between "policy inclusiveness" and "folk creativity": local governments shifted from restriction to empowerment, while grassroots people accumulated wisdom and capital through mobile commerce. This synergy of "bottom-up" and "top-down" mechanisms constitutes a core feature of Chinese modernization, demonstrating the creative tension between policy and practice.
