FUDAN University's School of Management has been selected a candidate member of the Partnership in International Management, a top business school network for promoting international exchange.

Once admitted as a formal PIM member, Fudan is expected to avail its Chinese Master of Business Administration students and faculty to more learning opportunities from its world-class counterparts - something that Chinese business education is thirsty for.

"Getting internationalized is a strategic approach for Chinese business schools to catch up to, and even surpass, those mature old schools," said Lu Xiongwen, the Fudan University School of Management dean.

"Promoting foreign exchange will endow our faculty and students with broad global vision. That is greatly needed for the improvement of Chinese MBA education."

Established in 1973, PIM was jointly initiated by three universities - London Business School, New York University and Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales in Finland.

The consortium has since expanded its network to cover 52 business schools worldwide.

To apply for PIM membership, candidates are required to have regular exchange agreements with at least 20 percent of other member schools. A range of graduate-level courses offered in English are also required.

As of October, Fudan had partnerships with 24 PIM members, easily surpassing the 20 percent compulsory requirement.

Last year, Fudan sent more than 30 full-time MBA students to study abroad for a semester.

School officials said the quota was expected to double this year.

However, sending individuals abroad is just an initial step in a school's internationalization, said Yin Zhiwen, the vice dean who oversees the school's international affairs.

"More in-depth cooperation, such as running joint programs, having Chinese faculty to do the research and write cases shoulder-to-shoulder with their foreign counterparts, are needed to make our contribution in the business education world," he said.
