On Nov. 13th, 2012, the 3rd course of Citi-Fudan University Banking Courses was finished in Room 104, Li Dasan Building. The whole lecture was divided mainly into 2 parts, both delivered by high level managers from Citi Bank: The first part is about Citi Transaction Services and Treasury Management and the second part is the Introduction of Markets.
Citi Transaction Services and Treasury Management
Mr. Yigen Pei, Managing Director and Country Head of Citi Transaction Services in China as well as Executive Vice President of Citi China, gave us an elaborate introduction about Treasury Management and Citi Transaction Services.
Firstly, he explained the role of treasury management using a metaphor “Three balls”—Liquidity Management, Financing and Risk Management. He mentioned that treasury manager must play around these Three balls in the meanwhile in order to ensure corporate’s operation and adapt in the changes of market in systematic manner. Three steps could be used to set the priority: Risk Management, Governance and Process, Efficiency and Control. He also stressed that working capital efficiency, supply chain stabilization, operational excellence were the priorities for corporations to implement treasurymanagement.
Secondly, he gave students an overview of global transaction services and treasury management in Citi, including the mission, organizational structure, network and development of the department in China. Citi Transaction Services contain current account services, capital account services and other services. Mr. Pei illustrated Citi’s treasury solution concept and best practice vividly through addressing the two big problems: What are CFOs doing? What keeps a Treasurer up at night? Then custodian service, QFII service, ADR service and escrow service were also explained.
After about one and half an hour speech,Mr. Pei kindly answered several questions raised by MBA students and received applaud for his professional lecture.
Introduction of Markets
Mr. Shenghua Hu, Executive Vice President and Head of Markets, Citi China, generalized his topic from following 2aspects: Overview of Citi Markets, Overview of China Financial Markets.
Firstly,Mr. Hu introduced the global and Asia Pacific Markets Organization. Hereferred that Citi provided a high quality service to clients through dominant underwriting, sales and trading, and distribution capabilities by adopting such a Hub/Country business model. Then he gave us an overview of products which were provided by Global Markets from plain vanilla to exotic derivatives across 25 locations in the Asia Pacific region.
Secondly,he talked about the current development of China Financial Markets, which is composed by Fixed Market, Fixed income Market and Derivatives Market. Detail information was given under each item. He recalled the history of China Fixed income Market and expressed that although the size of China Fixed income Market developed dramatically in recent years, it’s still in the preliminary stages of development. Swap Transaction was mentioned during the explanation of derivatives market. Mr. Hu outlined the trend and opportunities in this market in the future.
At about 17:00pm, this course was successfully finished in the applause from students. Apparently they all gained lots of information from today’s lecture and were looking forward to next course.
