Abstract
Surprisingly, innovation follows a set of patterns. For thousands of years, innovators used five simple patterns in their inventions, often without realizing it. These patterns are now embedded into the products and services you see around you. Think of them as the DNA of a product or service. An innovation method called Systematic Inventive Thinking (SIT) allows you to extract that DNA and apply it to anything you want to innovate – on demand.
The five patterns have been formed into structured techniques that regulate thinking and manage the ideation process. The method works by taking a product or service and breaking it into components. Using one of the techniques – subtraction, task unification, multiplication, division or attribute dependency – innovators can manipulate the components to create new-to-the-world ideas. The method literally forces you to create combinations and configurations that your were not likely to come up with on your own.
Systematic Inventive Thinking is used successfully around the world in virtually every sector, public and private. Companies such as GE, P&G, J&J, and Kraft have applied the method to create new products, processes, services, and business models.
