Dec 4^th 2015, Ms Tong Fei, who is CFO of Johnson Controls, hold a speech about “Transformation and Evolution for Multinational companies” on Fudan MBA Join Forum. 

Ms Fei started her speech by introducing herself. She graduated from RENMIN University of China and then started her career in U.S.A. for more than 15 years. She used to work in IDEX Corporation, Danaher Corporation and Motorola. She joined Johnson Controls as Vice President of Finance for Building Efficiency in 2012 and became CFO for APAC region in 2015. The reason why she gave the speech is that the business environment changed rapidly in China in recent years and have an impact on multinational companies. She want to share her understanding about it.

Ms Fei said the competitive landscape of multinational companies changed a lot. Huge amount of new rivals emerged and engaged with multinational companies in every aspects, among which Chinese companies grow strong. 98 Chinese companies were listed in Fortune 500 in 2015 while the number of year 2011 was only 68. They competed with multinational companies like Johnson Controls globally.

“In order to meet the challenge brought by the intensive competition, Johnson Controls reformed itself in the last 2 years, split into two different groups. One of them focused on Power Solution and Building Efficiency while another focused on Automobile Industry. The reform enabled Johnson Controls to centralized the resources and develop its core business.”

In the second part, Ms Fei gave the definition of Global Talents” Global mindset, strong learning ability and be able to quickly adapt the world”, who were exactly the type of talents that multinational companies were looking for. She encouraged young people to study and work abroad, to gather global mindset and experience. She emphasized that she never regret to go to U.S.A. 20 years ago. That actually helped her to become who she is right now.

“Companies can get smart engineer easily. What they are looking for is future leader” she said, “Following features are necessary for becoming a future leader: Confident about yourself; Be Persistent and never give up; Speak out your thoughts, especially for Chinese who are shy and not getting used to speak out their opinion”.

At the end of her speech, Ms Fei quoted a famous sentence from Charles Darwin “It is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can best manage change.”

Audiences were interested in her speech and asked question about how to making a right choice between Chinese company and multinational company. Her advice was “Growth speed is the advantage of Chinese companies while having a mature business, including good procedure and training system, is the advantage of multinational companies. If you care more about enjoy your life, Western-based multinational companies will be a good choice”
